Press Releases

We regularly publish press releases about work and research of the Stasi Records Archive. These are published in German language only.

Media Service

Information for researchers, representatives of the press, radio, and film (media) and civic education agencies

The Stasi Records Archive supports the political and historical reappraisal of the activities of the MfS the power mechanisms in both the former GDR and Soviet zone of occupation and National Socialist past.

Please find detailed information at Access Rights for Research and Media.

Film Permits and Footage

In general filming and taking photos on the premises of the Stasi Records Archive is permitted as long as it serves the purpose of historical reappraisal. And is must be in accordance with the provisions of the Stasi Records Act (StUG) and the German Data Protection Act (BDSG).

The Press Office issues permits to film and photograph on the premises of the Stasi Records Archive. The prerequisites for this are:

  • The film or photo project must serve to reappraise how the State Security Service operated.
  • Filming freely within the Stasi Records Archive's buildings is prohibited by the provisions of the StUG and the BDSG. Film and photo teams must always be escorted by the Stasi Records Archive staff.
  • Since filming often interrupts the work of the agency, we ask you to submit your request as soon as possible to allow us to prepare for the film shooting.
  • Filming and photography are generally only permitted during the agency’s business/work hours.

Filming permits are not issued for commercial film projects in which the federal agency’s premises serve as the backdrop to subjects unrelated to its reappraisal work.
